CHAPTER FIFTEEN

When they drove back into the town, they both groaned in unison at the sight meeting their eyes. Hecate Pendragon was outside the library, surrounded by members of the documentary team. It looked as if they were busy filming her.

Eben slowed down and took a good look, before driving past. “Bad timing, we should’ve stayed away longer.”

“No,” Aveline replied and put her hand over his. “This won’t disappear until I hurry it along.” She smiled over at him. “My afternoon with you helped a lot. So it’s not bad timing.” Her eyes sparkled.

“I’m glad to hear it.” He nodded. The only problem was, he wasn’t quite so sure.

“Oh, no,” Aveline declared in a horrified tone, a split second later. “You better stop.”

Hecate Pendragon was pointing at the van and making an announcement to the gathering. They couldn’t hear what she said, but the camera turned toward them and India Smyth marched over with her clipboard and tapped on the window of the passenger side.

Aveline wound down the window. “I’m not on duty this afternoon.”

India Smyth narrowed her eyes and looked at the pair of them in the van. “I understood you were going to find out about the spirits at the Lodgehouse Hotel. Ms. Pendragon is being very helpful, and we were just about to go into the library to find out more.”

Eben felt Aveline grow tense. He sensed her concern around the secret tower and the sacred books in her charge. She couldn’t let this crowd march in case they asked for a guided tour and discovered it.

“Really, it’s my day off. Can we do this another time?”

“It’d be most helpful if you’d come now, or I’ll have to ask your assistant to help us.”

Aveline wound up the window and opened the door, glancing his way before she climbed out.

“I’ll be right behind you,” Eben replied, and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek before she departed.

He quickly parked the van in a nearby town center car park, and jogged back to the scene. By the time he did, Aveline was speaking directly into the camera.

At her side, Hecate Pendragon grinned and fluttered like a peacock. She was in full drag, with fringed clothing, multiple shawls and ridiculous hats, like something from a pantomime.

Eben stood on the edge of the gathered crowd, and listened.

“We know a little about the spirit activity in the Lodgehouse Hotel, which you located with your equipment.” Aveline had switched into professional attitude and looked very much the part, the community holder of knowledge, smart and adorable. She’d donned her glasses, which she only used when she needed to read, but he figured she was hiding behind them. She peered over the rims, as if trying to look stern, but it always did bad things to him. He tried to concentrate on channeling her support.

“Can you give us more details?” The sound engineer had a large, furry microphone pointing in her direction.

Aveline looked at it dubiously. “Only that she was in service in the building during the Victorian age.
